Bahir Dar
Bahir Dar is a rapidly growing commercial town and the regional capital of the Amhara state. It is base for the exploration of the lake Tana islands and the Blue Nile falls.

Lake Tana-
Lake Tana is Ethiopia’s largest body of water(3600 sq. km. in area), and is dotted with some 37 islands. Twenty of these islands harbor famous monasteries like Narga, Dega Estifanos, Dek, Kibran Gebriel, Ura Kidanemihret etc. Many of these monasteries are decorated with religious- inspired art works that date into the medieval period. They are also repository to innumerable treasures.

The Blue Nile Falls

The Blue Nile falls is the major sight to see on either the White or the Blue Nile rivers. Locally called "tis Isat", the Blue Nile falls is about 35km. from Bahirdar. When in flood the fall is 400metres wide and drops more than 45 meters deep. It throws up a continuous spray of water, which drenches onlookers up to a km away. The misty deluge produces a rainbow, shimmering across the gorge, thus causing another dramatic phenomenon. The entire valley through which the Blue Nile flows is a geological wonder. Some equate it with the American Grand Canyon where the panorama gives a stunning view.
