Gondar
Established in 1632, Gondar served as the capital of the vast empire for almost two centuries. The crenellated castles built during the Gonderine period make it a town of fairy-tale castles. Just as King Lalibela chose to build a cluster of rock-hewn churches, King Fasilides set about creating crenellated castles. He had built the largest and his successors carried on his work. In its churches Gondar’s works of art focus mostly on religious themes. Also, Debre Birhan Selassie is a sight to be seen; maybe the finest of the Gondarine churches stands on elevated ground with its gorgeous artwork and special ceiling design & its eyes.
